Solitary (2016) – [framed] Documentary Film Series
As part of our [framed] documentary series, Next Stage Arts presents "Solitary" (2016), a 2017 Independent Spirit Award Nominee. A daring exploration of the lives of inmates and corrections officers in one of America’s most notorious supermax prisons, built to hold inmates in 8×10 cells, 23-hours a day, for months, years, and sometimes decades. With unprecedented access, the film captures a complex, unexpected and deeply moving portrait of life inside. (1h 30m) Screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Kristi Jacobson. The films in the [framed] series have recently played on the festival circuit around the world including Sundance and Tribeca, and all have been recognized with festival honors. The eclectic lineup explores a wide range of issues including gender, incarceration, beauty, otherness, greed, and the role of family and tradition. Curator Nancy Schafer worked for the iconic Tribeca Film Festival for 11 years, where she was most recently the festival’s executive director. Schafer and Next Stage co-founder Billy Straus met at the Camden International Film Festival in 2015 where Schafer serves on the advisory board, and the idea of programming a documentary series for Next Stage was born.
