 The Putney Fire Department
By Stuart Strothman and Laurel Ellis
Putney has long been rightfully proud of its fire department, which in 2004 responded to a record 343 calls, and gave 4300 additional volunteer hours over to maintenance, education, and training. As we look forward to our new firehouse on the solid ground of the old salt shed property
across from the Co-op, it seems like a good time to look back and consider some of the ways our fire department has served our community, and how things have changed over the years.

Who (The People at West Hill Are)
We have new owners, as of July 13, 2004. Jim and Diny Sweitzer purchased the shop because they wanted to have more fun at work! And they are! The Sweitzers have lived in Putney since 1998 and have two sons. The whole family participates in cycling and x-c skiing. Jim can be seen riding his steel Serotta road bike, his Litespeed mountain bike or his newly Dura-Aced 'cross bike and he is getting ready to build his Independent Fabrications Ti Crown Jewel with Campy Chorus.

 From the PMA website: http://www.putneymountain.org/
The Putney Mountain Association (PMA) was established in 1946 by a small group of Putney residents who wished to assure that Putney Mountain, a popular local lookout, remained undeveloped and accessible to the public. They purchased a 45-acre tract including the lookout and surrounding woodlands lying just above the Putney Town Forest, which had been donated to the Town in the thirties.

When I asked Putney Town Manager Chris Ryan if he would give iPutney.com readers an update on happenings in Putney, he responded immediately with the following email. Thanks, Chris!
“My first month has been consumed with gaining at least a basic familiarity with a surprising number of projects and, of course, the citizens who are providing the energy/enthusiasm to keep them moving. Of particular interest at the moment is the Town Hall, which is receiving a new slate and copper roof, and, we hope, much more attention in the coming year.
