Putney Central Explores Pre-school Ned

Parents attending the First Day Hooray program at the Central School will find a survey in their packet, asking about their need for child care services. The school is exploring the possibility of a program for three and four year olds that would begin in 2011.

Others in the community with need for an early childhood program are invited to email School Counselor Kathleen Bartlett at kathleen_bartlett@wsesu.org. Be sure to include the following info:

Putney Native Receives M.D. from UVM, May 23, 2010

A. Shams Helminski, M.D., received his medical degree during the University of Vermont College of Medicine's Commencement Ceremony in Ira Allen Chapel on Sunday, May 23, 2010. He will begin an internal medicine residency at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu this month.

What to do After School

Putney Family Services is offering three new after-school enrichment programs for elementary aged students.

-- Mountain Biking with Tony Coven and Pip Bannister, Thursdays beginning April 29.
-- Chess Club with Dan Foster beginning April 28.
-- Garden Program with Tara Gordan beginning Thursday, May 6.

Putney Central School Endowment Grants Available

The Putney Central School Endowment Fund is now offering funding for programs that will enrich the academic curriculum or establish a new after-school activity. Proposals for programs for the 2010-2011 school year may not exceed $500, and can be submitted by any member of the Putney community by April 1, 2010. Parent Education Course Offered

Guiding Good Choices is a FREE, interactive ten-hour course that gives parents and guardians of 4th-8th grade tools and strategies to meet the challenges of guiding their teens through adolescence into healthy, responsible adulthood.

This research-based course teaches how to:
set clear guidelines * manage conflict * help kids resist peer pressure * strengthen family bonds *

The course is proven-effective for preventing alcohol and drug use and abuse.

Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning Presentation at The Putney School

Richard Brady and Kirstin Edelglass will present "Tuning In: Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning" at The Putney School's Calder Hall in the Michael S. Currier Center on Sunday, January 31 from 7-8 p.m. A discussion on the topic will follow at 8 p.m. The presentation and discussion session are free and open to the public.

Mindfulness-based activities support learning in three ways: They provide students tools to reduce their stress, focus their attention, and encounter material in a deeply connecting way. In this presentation each of these benefits will be examined and the activities leading to them.

Artists in Residence at The Grammar School

The Grammar School welcomed two visiting artists in residence in November. Sculptor Andrea Stix Wasserman and muralist Terry Sylvester were funded by a grant from the Clowes Foundation.

Wasserman spent two days at The Grammar School working with kindergarten and first graders to create personal sculptures in the outdoors. TGS art teacher William Chambers remarked, “The kids were so enthusiastic and excited about working with her. Her focus was on nature and the value of place, and the children were thrilled to choose their own settings and make their sculptures.”

Putney Central School Band Concert at Putney Cares Barn

The Putney Fortnightly Club invites all to attend the Band Concert to be given by the students of Putney Central School under the leadership of their Director, Dan Seiden. It will be held in the Putney Cares Barn on Friday, October 30th, at 2:00pm.
Refreshments will be served.
