Sarasa Ensemble: Viola, Viola! Mozart & Brahms Viola Quintets
January 17 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
The Sarasa Chamber Music Ensemble, currently Season Guest Artists at the Brattleboro Music Center, focuses its next program on the viola, ‘the warmth of the middle voice.’
“Viola, Viola! Mozart & Brahms Viola Quintets” is set for Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the BMC. Tickets are $20 general admission, $10 for students, and are available by calling 802-257-4523 or online at bmcvt.org.
The Sarasa Ensemble includes violinists Rodolfo Richter and Susannah Foster, Jenny Stirling and Jason Fisher on viola, and Timothy Merton on cello.
In this program, the Cambridge-based group focuses on the viola’s tenor range, which binds the top voice with the bottom, a sort of sandwich filling that brings out the best flavor in an ensemble. It is the instrument that many composers preferred to play in chamber music settings, especially J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Dvorak, among others.
The program includes Mozart’s String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K. 516 and Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 111, performed on gut strings and with historical bows.
Both Mozart and Brahms composed these and other incredibly wonderful viola parts in their compositions, relishing in the beauty of its timbre in string quartets, sextets, serenades, symphonies, operas and masses.
