My name is Bex Slattery and I am running for Selectboard in Putney.
I am originally from Westport Massachusetts. My appreciation for civic engagement came from growing up in a small town where my grandparents were deeply involved. My grandfather served on the School Committee, and I held signs for local candidates. They taught me that being engaged in the community is both a responsibility and a privilege.
In my twenties I started working on Tall Ships, this is where I met my partner Lydia. After many years of sailing we retired to life on land to care for my Grandmother. When it was time to find our own home where we could raise our children we felt a real pull to Putney. Two years ago we were fortunate enough to put down roots here.
This town is welcoming, vibrant, and a wonderful place to raise a family. Now that Putney is my home, I am eager to contribute to the community that has given me so much.
My decision to run for Selectboard comes from a desire to be involved and serve. Now that my kids are on the other side of toddlerhood and I have more bandwidth beyond my family’s immediate needs I felt it was time to get more involved with my community. I have always believed in civic participation—so much so that before even considering a campaign, I made sure I had Town Meeting Day off to participate. When the idea of running was suggested to me, I realized that I was genuinely interested in stepping up. Attending Selectboard meetings further confirmed that this is something I want to do.
I approach this role with an open mind and a commitment to working for the benefit of the entire town, not just one segment of the community. I believe in collaboration, thoughtful decision-making, and fostering a strong, inclusive, and economically resilient Putney.
If anyone is interested in sitting down with me over a cup of coffee I will be at the Putney Co-op on Sunday February 9th and 16th from 8:30 to 9:30. You can also email me at slatterybecky@gmail.com.
