Yellow Barn is opening its doors early for a special concert to benefit the Ukrainian people.
The internationally renowned Russian pianist Boris Berman will perform works by his close friend and colleague, the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov.
100% of ticket sales for this event will benefit the Ukrainian people, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Berman and the Big Barn. In order to provide support where it is most needed at the time of this event, the benefiting organization will be selected and announced on May 22nd.
“It is said that when cannons speak the muses fall silent. Silvestrov’s soft intensity cuts through the clamor and brutality of this cruel war to emerge from the devastation caused by the barbaric invasion,” says Mr. Berman.
Silvestrov is the most important Ukrainian composer of our time. He attracted attention in 1960s as one of the “underground Soviet modernists.” These talented musicians were keen on discovering new ways of musical expression, different from those approved by the Soviet officialdom. Among these diverse musical voices Silvestrov’s was a lyrical, introverted one, looking for delicate shades and nuanced sonorities. In his later years he moved away from modernist techniques, his music became even more introspective and intimate.
Born in Moscow, Boris Berman studied at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with the distinguished pianist Lev Oborin. In 1973, he left a flourishing career in the Soviet Union to immigrate to Israel where he quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after keyboard performers. Presently, he resides in New Haven, where he heads the Piano Department of the Yale School of Music. A Grammy Award nominee, Berman performs regularly in more than fifty countries on six continents. His highly acclaimed performances have included appearances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, The Philharmonia (London), the Toronto Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Royal Scottish Orchestra. A frequent performer on major recital series, he has also appeared in many prominent festivals, including Yellow Barn.
Please note: All attendees will be asked to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination, including booster. In addition, we are currently requiring masks to be worn while inside the Big Barn. Capacity is limited to 70%.
