Shokazoba (a Nigerian term for “shock absorber”) is an award-winning, horn-driven dance party powerhouse known for delivering high-energy, original music that moves the body, inspires the mind, and ignites the soul. Founded in 2005 as a tribute to Fela Kuti, their mission is to promote conscious awareness and drive positive social change through irresistibly danceable, polyrhythmic trance music they call New World Funk.
Shokazoba’s sound blends a wide range of influences, taking listeners on a transformative journey of self-discovery. Their commitment to true egalitarianism, empathy, and respect for all individuals is reflected in their powerful, thought-provoking lyrics, which tackle important social and political topics with passionate honesty. At its core, Shokazoba’s music is a spiritual experience—one that fosters deep human connection through the universal joy of celebratory dance.
Zikina is a collective of musicians who have come together from across continents and cultures to prove that, despite the forces in the world that highlight our differences and attempt to divide us, we can unite to create something beautiful and new. Their music effortlessly brings people together—inviting you to dance, clap, connect with those around you, and fully embrace the present moment.
Led by Uganda native Gideon Ampeire, Zikina features a captivating blend of traditional East African instruments, including the enanga (zither), adungu (harp), and kalimba (thumb piano)—all of which Gideon builds himself. These rich, resonant sounds harmonize with guitar, bass, and drums in a way that feels both refreshingly new and deeply familiar. Mike Cardozo (guitar, percussion) improvises intricate melodies alongside Gideon, while adding punchy rhythmic lines that move effortlessly with the beat. Roston Kirk (bass) and Kurt Eisele-Dyrli (drums) craft a sonic landscape that flows from intense grooves to joyous dance beats to dreamy textures, creating a dynamic foundation for the performance. Gideon’s vocals—whether cutting powerfully through the music or floating lightly above—add an emotional depth that enhances the group’s distinctive sound. The result is something truly unique, yet instantly accessible.
