Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present singer/songwriter Dar Williams as part of the 2021 Next Stage "Bandwagon Summer Series," an outdoor, socially-distanced concert series, on Saturday, October 2 at 3:00 pm at Cooper Field in Putney, VT. Fellow singer/songwriter Crys Matthews opens the show. Known as much for her staunch progressive ideals as her raw acoustic energy, Dar Williams has been captivating audiences with sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting since the 1990s. Her lyrics contain bouquets of optimism, delivered on melodies alternating between beguiling lightness and understated gravity. "The New Yorker" calls Dar "one of America's very best singer/songwriters" whose songs are "variously, devastatingly moving, tenderly funny, subtle without being in any way inaccessible, and utterly fresh." Dar's growth as an individual over her two-decade-long career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist, touring along the way with such distinguished peers as Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, Loudon Wainwright III, and Shawn Colvin. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90s Boston scene, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers, Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, and folk artists. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album "The Honesty Room" in 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. Meanwhile, thanks to her avid supporters and 100,000+ sales for each new album, Dar’s literate but highly-listenable songs were showing up everywhere from commercial radio to college reading lists. By 1997, she was on main stages throughout North America, including Lilith Fair, Newport Folk Festival, Bumbershoot, Carnegie Hall, and Canadian festivals from Vancouver to Nova Scotia. Returning to the road this fall, she celebrates the release of her 12th album "I'll Meet You Here." Already being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie,” DC resident Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls "the poster-child for intersectionality," she and her new, hope-fueled, love-filled social justice album “Changemakers” are made for these times.
