Exhibit Opening: Stu Copans’ Peace-Themed Papercuts

The exhibit spaces in All Souls Church Unitarian Universalist in West Brattleboro are hosting Stu Copans’ annual exhibit of papercuts and other artwork with a Peace theme through the end of October.

Images in this show, as in previous years, are paper cuttings containing the word “peace,” in English, Arabic, or Hebrew. The cuttings have been inspired by a range of sources, including Copans’ work with children at the Kids for Peace Camp in Guilford this summer, brass lanterns in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City, flowers, trees, oriental carpets, and designs on the tiles of Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan’s (c. 1489-1588) many mosques.

“I am increasingly aware of the disastrous effects of wars and regional conflicts on children,” shares Copans. “While the focus of the show is on peace and the importance of working to help it come about at all levels—internally, in our relationships, in our communities, our country, and in the world—I have displayed, throughout the show, small excerpts focused on the effects of war and displacement on children, as well as a sampling of prayers for peace from a variety of religions and countries.”

The public will have a chance to meet Copans and speak with him about his ongoing Papercuts for Peace project at an Artist’s Reception hosted by the All Souls Arts Committee on Saturday, September 19, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Otherwise the exhibit is open for visitors during worshop services and other public events in the building, as well as 1:00 to 4:00 on Monday through Thursday, when the church office is open, or by appointment.

All Souls Church, aka West Village Meeting House, is at 29 South St., across from the West Brattleboro fire station and village green, a little over a mile west of Exit 2 off Interstate 91. Call Bruce Landenberger in the office for further info, (802) 254-9377.
