Join Doimnic Giolla Bhríde and Frances Morton on Monday, September 3rd, at River Valley Akido for an evening of music inspired by the greatest Irish traditions! Doiminic speaks both English and Irish, and hails from a Donegal Gaeltacht. His earliest local influences include Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill, Lillis Ó Laoire, Áine Bn. Uí Laoi, Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh and his mother Nellie Nic Giolla Bhríde.
Doiminic studied music at University, picking up pipes and accordion along the way, while remaining true to his original influences by pursuing a path as a singer. He has performed to audiences in Ireland and across the world and worked with some of the best in traditional music!
He won the prestigious Corn Uí Riada, the highest accolade in Ireland for sean-nós singers in 2009. He has released four highly-commended CDs to date: Saol na Suáilce (solo CD) Siansaí (choir CD) Guaillimh a’ chéile (CD with Scottish musician and singer Griogair Labhruidh) Smúidghealach (CD with string quintet) and has also published a book and CD for children Ící Pící which is hugely popular.
His most recent album, Sona do Cheird, launched in 2015, contains his own compositions and arrangements to a range of ancient Gaelic poetry, and won ‘Album of the Year’ at the NÓS awards in 2016.
Frances Morton accompanies the songs on flute and tin whistle. Frances began playing traditional music at a young age and went on to win several titles between the 12-18 categories at the All Scotland, All Britain and All-Ireland Fleadhanna on tin whistle and flute. Since then, she has adjudicated at competitions and performed in a range of Irish, Scottish and European festivals with traditional groups. She regularly plays in sessions with renowned musicians from bands such as Dervish, Lunasa, Capercaillie and Altan.
Over the past two years, Frances and Doimnic have made several tours of East and West Coast America, supported Declan O’Rourke and recorded for a BBC programme, “Innovation in Traditional Music.” They perform regularly with Doimnic’s Gaelic choir, Glórthaí Uladh, and recently have played at Fiddlers’ Green Festival among others.
