Why do we paint what we paint, and how do we choose to tell that story? Join us for an intensive one-day workshop with Putney Painter, Charlie Hunter, where we explore the language and techniques of atmospheric, low-chroma painting.
For one day, we will set aside color and instead focus on edges and values in our paintings – and the results can be eye-opening!
Charlie Hunter is a nationally recognized painter of the post-pastoral American landscape, known for superb draftsmanship and composition. Hunter employs a variety of unorthodox techniques and tools that reference both photographic and painterly traditions.
Hunter has won first and grand prizes at top plein air events across the country, including Easton, Laguna, and Door County, and has served as judge or juror at many more. Alongside painter Larry Moore, Hunter created the En Train Air painting train, and his REASONABLY FINE ART TALKS continue to attract a loyal following.
Hunter’s work centers on rural and small-town America and how the past is evidenced in the present day. Initially a graphic designer of tour posters for musicians such as the Jerry Garcia Band, Bob Dylan, and The Clash, Hunter became a music manager and event producer before turning to painting full-time. Hunter’s 2025 activities include solo shows at McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe and William Baczek Fine Arts in Northampton, MA. He is an invited participant at the 2025 ART IN THE OPEN in Wexford, Ireland, and a recipient of a fellowship at the Tides Institute in Eastport, Maine.
Special Evening Treat! The Richard Schmid Residence Tour
The class members will be welcomed into the home and studios of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik for an intimate tour of their life and art. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see many of Richard’s finest works up close. The tour in Walpole will be guided by Nancy and members of the Putney Painters—Richard’s private painting group for the last 20 years of his remarkable life. Proceeds from the tours support the Richard Schmid Fine Art Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to preserve his living legacy and personal collection. The Foundation continues to advance Richard’s educational and artistic spirit of excellence and generosity through his art and vision. As Richard often said,
“Art has the power to do good.”
