The Town of Putney is seeking a person to fill the vacant position of Selectboard member. The law requires that a member be a legally qualified voter to Putney per Vermont State Statute 17 V.S.A. § 2646(4). This person shall be eighteen years of age, have taken the voter’s oath, be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Vermont, and registered to vote per Vermont State Statute 17 V.S.A. § 2121.
The responsibilities and authorities of a Selectboard Member are as follows:
Selectboard members shall have the general supervision of the affairs of the town and shall cause to be performed all duties required of towns and town school districts not committed by law to the care of any particular officer (24 V.S.A. § 872);
Selectboard must perform the duties directly assigned to it by the Legislature and the duties assigned to the town generally, but not to any other town officer, board, or municipal entity (e.g., fire district or library); the Selectboard must not interfere with the duties granted specifically to other town officers, boards and entities, and it may not perform acts which the Legislature has not authorized it to perform.
The Town of Putney operates with a three-member board. This position will fill a three-year seat which expires March 2, 2021, close of business on Town Meeting day.
